Brainwaves 2018 – Conditions of Entry


  1. Competition Sponsors
  • This competition is sponsored by Royal Caribbean (Asia) PTE Ltd t/a Royal Caribbean with registered office address at 3 Anson Road, Springleaf Tower, Singapore 079909  (“Royal Caribbean”).
  1. Competition Basics
  • To celebrate its strong culture of innovation, Royal Caribbean invites tertiary students in Singapore to participate in a challenge to think outside of the box (or ship) and come up with a design of ‘the cruise ship of the future’. This will coincide with the lead up to the launch of Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Spectrum of the Seas®, coming to Asia in Spring 2019.
  • Five designs will be shortlisted for a final round of judging on the 5th October 2018 where the five finalists will pitch their idea before a judging panel consisting of Royal Caribbean’s APAC Managing Director and Miami HQ, on the 15th October 2018. 
  • The Grand Prize winner will win an Asian cruise for two on Spectrum of the Seas® and $5,000 cash prize. The four Runners up will also receive prizes.
  1. Who is Eligible to Participate
  • Only current diploma or university students,
    who are studying in an Institute of Higher Learning in Singapore,
    and possess a corresponding valid institution’s identity document
    (e.g. student or matriculation card) 18 years of age or over on the 30th July 2018 may enter this competition.
  1. How to Enter
  • By participating in this competition participants are deemed to agree these conditions.
  • Participants and Submissions must comply fully with these terms and conditions in order to be eligible to participate in this competition.
  • To participate, the participant must illustrate their idea of three innovative features for a cruise ship targeted at millennials, with each feature touching on each of the three key components of a cruise ship – entertainment, activities, and accommodation, as well as the side profile of the ship to showcase an overall design. The entry is to be submitted through the Brainwaves microsite during the period of 0001 hrs 30 July – 2359 hrs 30 September Singapore time.
  • Each participant may only make one Submission during the competition period. Multiple Submissions will invalidate all entries.
  • All Submission(s) must be original work. Any form of plagiarism or copying is not allowed.
  • Royal Caribbean shall not be responsible for entries that are lost or contain corrupted data due to whatever reasons. No entry shall be deemed received until an acknowledgement is sent by email.
  • Royal Caribbean staff and immediate family members (i.e. spouse and children) of staff who are part of the Brainwaves 2018 team planning, managing and overseeing this Competition, as well as the Competition’s sponsors’ or partners’ staff and immediate family members of such staff who are part of the team planning, managing and overseeing this Competition, are not eligible to participate in the Competition.
  1. Upload Criteria
  • The participant must submit their entry through the Brainwaves microsite [] during the period of 0001 hours on 30 July to 2359 hours on 30 September Singapore time (the “Submission”).
  • To qualify, the participant must include at least one design visual with their entry. The participant can upload at least one (but no more than four) visual illustrations.
  • The participant needs to provide a description of their entry (up to 500 words) in English. The description should cover how the entry works, what makes it novel, and where it would be applied.
  • File type options are: PDFTIFFJPGPNG. File size must not exceed five(5) MB and illustrations need to be at least 150 DPI in resolution. The visual illustration(s) should complement the entry description and can be drawings, photos, or CAD images.
  • Entries submitted without an illustration automatically will be disqualified, no exceptions. PowerPoint presentations, white papers, or other documents as illustrations will not be accepted. All descriptive text should be entered in the space provided on the Entry Form. Text on illustrations should be limited to captions or call outs.
  • The participant will also have the option of submitting video to support their entry (limited to one video per entry). Maximum length: three minutes. First, upload the video to YouTube, Veoh, or Vimeo. Then, when completing the Entry Form, provide the link to the video where indicated on the form. Royal Caribbean will not be accepting any video files by e-mail.
  • All Submissions must: (a) be original work and not be owned by or subject to any other person or entity having any right or interest in it; and (b) not violate any Intellectual Property Rights or other rights including but not limited to contract, copyright, patent, trademark, and/or privacy rights, of any other person or entity.
  • Submissions must not bear any clear resemblance towards any existing or upcoming innovations of any Royal Caribbean ships or ships of any other competing cruise lines.
  1. Granting of Rights
  • By entering this competition, each participant acknowledges and agrees that Royal Caribbean may obtain many submissions in connection with this competition and/or other marketing initiatives or challenges staged and/or offered by Royal Caribbean (“submitted ideas”), and that such submission may be similar or identical in theme, idea, format or other respects to other submitted ideas or other materials developed by Royal Caribbean or its contractors or agents. Unless prohibited by law, each participant waives any and all claims against Royal Caribbean and/or any other participants/teams Royal Caribbean may have had and/or may have (presently or in the future), that any submission and/or other works (including videos) accepted, reviewed and/or used by Royal Caribbean or other participants may be similar to his/her submission, or that any compensation is due to such participant in connection with such submission or other works used by Royal Caribbean.
  • Each participant hereby grants an irrevocable, perpetual, exclusive, royalty free, worldwide license (“IPR license”) to Royal Caribbean, its parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises ltd of Miami, Florida and any subsidiary business of the aforementioned, effective as of the date of this document, to use, exploit, sub-license, discuss, distribute, publicise, market and/or create derivative works with, (i) the intellectual property comprised in any and all submissions and/or (ii) any content derived from or relating to the submissions and/or licensed rights.
  • Each participant hereby grants to Royal Caribbean, its parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. of Miami, Florida, and any subsidiaries, affiliates, and trade partners, the full, irrevocable and perpetual right to tape and photograph participants and/or Winner/s, and record participant’s voice, conversation and sounds, including any performance of any musical composition(s), during and in connection with participant’s appearance and that Royal Caribbean shall be the exclusive owner of the results and proceeds of such taping, photography and recording pursuant to this Contest for all purposes, with all right, title and interest in the results and proceeds of the services and the right to use and/or exploit the results and proceeds of such services an unlimited number of times, by any and all media, whether now know or hereafter devised, throughout the universe in perpetuity, for any purpose without restriction, and without further required permission, approval, or payment. For purposes of clarity, participants expressly waive any and all moral rights they may have in connection with their appearance.
  1. Judging Submissions: Selecting Shortlisted Participants
  • Eligible Submissions will be evaluated after the closing date by a panel of one or more judges selected by Royal Caribbean (herein referred to as “Judging Panel”). The Judging Panel may be employees of Royal Caribbean or external, and may change before or during the judging period. Judging may take place in one or more rounds with one or more panels of judges, at the discretion of Royal Caribbean.
  • The Judging Panel will score eligible Submissions using the following criteria (herein referred to as “Judging Criteria”):
    • Innovation and Creativity (40% of score) –What makes the idea novel?
      • Does the idea show originality and differentiation?
      • Is the idea new or does it supplement an existing feature with a new desirable quality?
    • Appeal (20%) –Does the idea rightly appeal to the target demographic of youths?
      • Does the idea satisfy an existing need or desire?
      • Does the idea create substantial benefits for the target demographic?
    • Brand suitability (20%) –Do the ideas reflect RCI’s family friendly brand?
      • How well does the idea integrate into RCI’s brand?
    • Buildability (20%) –Can the ideas be built?
      • Is the idea appropriate for its intended use?
      • Does the idea have a reasonable chance to be developed as a finished product?
  • These criteria may change at the sole discretion of Royal Caribbean.
  • The top five (5) scoring participants whose Submission has earned the highest overall score based on the Judging Criteria will be selected as finalists.
  • Finalists will be announced by email on the 5thOctober 2018. If you have not received such notification on the 5th October 2018, unfortunately you have been unsuccessful.
  1. Selection of Winner and Runners Up
  • Finalists are invited to attend an event taking place at 3 Anson Road, #13-02 Springleaf Tower, 079909 on the 15th October 2018 where they will need to pitch their Submission to the judging panel.
  • Travel to and from the event shall be at the finalists own cost and expense.
  • The panel will select the winner based on the criteria set out at paragraph 4 but additionally based on passion, technical explanation and commercial awareness.

  1. Prizes
  • The prizes are as follows:
    • Grand prize: An Asian cruise for two on Spectrum of the Seas® and SGD5,000 cash prize
    • Second prize: An Asian cruise for two on Voyager of the Seas® and SGD3,000 cash prize
    • Third prize: An Asian cruise for two on Voyager of the Seas® and SGD2,000 cash prize
    • 2 x consolation prizes: An Asian cruise for two on Voyager of the Seas®, for the other two finalists
    • Cruise prizes are subject to the Sponsor’s booking terms and conditions, as applicable and save where varied by these competition terms. See for booking conditions.
    • Dates of travel will be advised to winners and will be subject to availability. All winners must obtain travel insurance.
    • If for any reason the winner/s is unable to travel on the dates of travel (including if the winner fails to comply with any and all local entry, visa and/or other legislative requirements), the Cruise Prize shall be invalidated without further liability to Royal Caribbean.
    • The Prize cannot be transferred to another person.
    • The Cruise Prize is not negotiable, transferable, exchangeable or redeemable for cash, credit, or kind, either in part or in full.
    • The winner must have valid travel documents for their travel. The winner shall be responsible to ensure that they have all necessary visa and any other travel approval(s) including travel  insurance.
    • It is the sole responsibility of the winner/s to arrange and pay for all customs and immigration fees, visas, insurance, any fees imposed by any relevant governments and authorities, inoculations and/or vaccinations, and other expenses of a personal nature.
    • The winner/s will not be reimbursed for any time he/she may have to take off work or other commitments in order to utilize the Cruise Prize.
  1. Submission Usage and Publicity
  • Winners agree to participate in media, promotional activity or publicity related to the Competition without additional payment or compensation apart from reasonable travel and subsistence expenses on reasonable request and notice of Royal Caribbean.
  • Participants acknowledge and agree that Royal Caribbean may display publicly, archive and reproduce any Submissions for broadcast, marketing, publicity and promotional purposes without any payment to the participants. This includes, but is not limited to, posting or linking to the Submission on the Royal Caribbean website as well as Royal Caribbean’s proprietary social media channels and website, and display and promotion of any Submission in any other media worldwide.
  • Participants agree that Royal Caribbean may use any information in Royal Caribbean representatives’ unaided memories in the development or deployment of Royal Caribbean products or services without liability or compensation to the participants. Participants will not receive any compensation or credit from Royal Caribbean for use of the Submission in connection with this Competition, save as expressly provided for under the Terms and Conditions. Royal Caribbean is not responsible for any unauthorized use of the Submission by those accessing or viewing the Submission.
  • Royal Caribbean is not obligated to use any Submission for any purpose.
  • Participants are not granted the permission to use or display any of the Royal Caribbean’s trademarks (e.g. logo) or rights in any form. Participants agree to seek the prior written consent of Royal Caribbean prior to promoting or publicizing their participation or activities related to the Competition.
  1. Privacy
  • Royal Caribbean may collect personal data such as your name, NRIC number, email address and phone number when you provide Royal Caribbean with your personal data directly for the purpose of administering the competition.
  • Participants may be filmed or photographed while participating in the competition and Royal Caribbean may collect your photographs, audio-visual footage, comments, and any other record of your participation in the competition and use such materials for the purpose of promoting the competition, the brand Royal Caribbean, its ships and services for a period of 12 months following the announcement of the winner. By entering the competition you agree to this.
  1. Miscellaneous Terms
  • Royal Caribbean reserves the right to disqualify entries that fail to meet the entry requirements as described in these Rules and Guidelines.
  • Royal Caribbean reserves the right to disqualify any participant, team and/or Submission that does not meet any of the Terms and Conditions, including but not limited to Submissions containing inaccurate, invalid or misleading information.
  • Royal Caribbean reserves the right to assess participants’ eligibility and compliance with the Terms and Conditions at any point during the Competition. Participants must provide prompt assistance when called upon.
  • Any participant’s work deemed by the Judging Panel to be obscene, incendiary, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate will not be considered for this Competition and Royal Caribbean and/or the Judging Panel have absolute discretion to decide on it.
  • Participants must not communicate with or attempt to influence the Judging Panel. Failure to adhere to this rule may result in disqualification of the relevant participant and/or team.
  • Participants agree to abide by the decisions of Royal Caribbean and the judges, which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to this Contest. By entering, they agree to waive any right to claim ambiguity or error in these Rules and Guidelines.
  • In Collection of the Prize may require the receipt by Royal Caribbean of all required and completed forms from all participants of the team. If participants do not sign the required forms or provide the required information within one (1) month following Royal Caribbean’s request, the Prize will be forfeited and Royal Caribbean or the Judging Panel are under no obligation to award the Prize to other participants or teams.
  • Participants acknowledge and agree fully and unconditionally to the Terms and Conditions, and other instructions related to the Competition, as well as to Royal Caribbean’s and/or the Judging Panel’s decisions regarding the Competition, which are final and binding. Participants must also comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Without limiting Royal Caribbean’s rights and remedies, Royal Caribbean reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any participant or team who: (a) fails to comply with any provision of the Terms and Conditions (b) cheats or tampers with the operation of the Competition, or otherwise acts in a disruptive or inappropriate manner; or (c) engages in conduct that is unlawful, offensive, or otherwise leads Royal Caribbean to conclude, in its sole discretion, that public association with the participant could cause controversy or embarrassment to Royal Caribbean or its partners.
  • In the event that the operation, security, or administration of the Competition is in Royal Caribbean’s judgment impaired in any way, Royal Caribbean may, in its sole discretion, without limitation: (a) suspend the Competition to address the impairment and then resume the Competition; (b) extend the Competition period to account for any period of impairment, or (c) take any other reasonable action as Royal Caribbean deems necessary and appropriate to the circumstances.
  • Except where prohibited under Singapore law, participants agree that any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of, or connected with, the Competition or any Prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the appropriate court in Singapore. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of the Terms and Conditions, participants’ rights and obligations, or Royal Caribbean’s rights and obligations, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of Singapore, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of Singapore or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than Singapore.
  • Royal Caribbean’s failure to enforce any term of the Terms and Conditions shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.
  • Participants agree that the relationship amongst participants and Royal Caribbean is not a confidential, fiduciary, or other special relationship.
  • Entry to the Competition is personal to the participant. No other person has any right under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act (Cap 53B) to enforce the participant’s rights under the Terms and Conditions or enjoy any benefit of any Prize.
  1. Law and Jurisdiction
  • This competition is subject to Singapore law and the exclusive jurisdiction of the Singapore courts.
